800,000 federal workers were without pay for 35 days. While those federal workers will ultimately be paid for their work, a million federal contractors will not. Unable to make timely payments, from student loans to mortgages and credit cards, workers have been left with “debts, bad credit, and shattered trust.” Employees have been selling personal items, lining up for free meals, and/or seeking temporary work outside of their government posts.
Sign the petition to tell our elected officials: this cannot happen again! Government shutdowns should not be used as a tool for our politicians to get what they want; our federal workers should not be used as pawns. These are American livelihoods at stake.
