From Your Lobbyist: Vote Vote Vote
October 26, 2020
Week of Oct 26-30
Happy Monday, AYA Advocates.
We have just 8 days until the election, and the most important way to affect the change we want is to vote. Vote early, vote by mail, vote in person, and help others to vote!
Your votes matter. Young Americans make up 37% of the voting population, and have the capacity to change the makeup of our local, state, and federal government. Some quick facts about youth voting:
- Since 2016, there has been a 27% increase in share of overall the youth vote at this time, with people ages 18-29 rising from 1.9 million to 5.4 million and a 23% share increase of 30-39 year olds from 2.2 million votes cast to 6 million cast as of right now. - The recently released Harvard Youth Poll, youth turnout is on track to break records: 63% of respondents indicated they will “definitely be voting,” which remains consistent with the turnout measured in our September 2020 survey, and in contrast to 47% during this same time in 2016.
- According to Tom Bonier on Twitter, “The number of early voters under the age of 30 who are voting for the first time in their life (1,451,151) is more than double the number of first time voters at this point in the 2016 election.”
All of this is a great sign of the progress we are making to elect officials that more closely represent us…but we can’t get complacent!. Let’s spend the next few days helping everyone we know to participate in our democracy by encouraging them to vote. Nothing is guaranteed and we can’t take even a single vote for granted.
AYA will be here for you every step of the way and as we always say, politicians are elected on voting day, but laws are made every day thereafter. For those reasons, we will soon launch our “After the Vote” campaign to help you continue the important advocacy around policy issues we care about.
