Tell your Reps: We need a rent freeze.
In the next COVID-19 Stimulus Package, young Americans need a rent freeze. We need a national, 90-day rent moratorium, which would offer economic stability to struggling young people and help keep them safe and healthy in their homes.
Young workers are particularly vulnerable in this crisis—approximately 38% of 18-34 year olds are part of the gig economy, and many others work in the service industry. Given that the majority of Millennials rent instead of own their homes (65% of households headed by young adults are renting), many young people who have lost their jobs are facing the very real prospect of eviction as a result of this crisis.
A pause on rent payments would keep young people safe from the threat of eviction, and enable them to focus their limited funds on health and family. The last stimulus bill gave homeowners experiencing financial hardships the option to request up to 180 days of forbearance on their mortgage; it’s time the government offers assistance to renters as well.
Tell your Reps: in the 4th COVID-19 Stimulus Package, young Americans need a rent freeze!
TL;DR?
Tell your Reps to enact a national, 90-day rent moratorium to provide economic stability to struggling young people and help keep them safe and healthy in their homes.
