Support the College Affordability Act!
The time to act is now! Support legislation that makes college more affordable and protects student borrowers.
Every American deserves the opportunity to obtain a higher education degree without going into insurmountable debt. Unfortunately, since 1980 average college tuition has skyrocketed and average income has failed to keep up, making college unattainable for too many Americans. Total outstanding student debt has reached a crisis point––ballooning to $1.56 trillion––with young people, minorities, and women holding the majority of that debt.
Thankfully, the House Education and Labor Committee just introduced comprehensive legislation, which if passed into law would drastically improve our nation’s higher ed system. The College Affordability Act (H.R. 4674) would lower the cost of college for students and families by increasing support for student aid programs, improve the quality of higher education through stronger accountability measures, and protect student borrowers from predatory colleges.
If passed, the bill would do a ton of the things AYA regularly lobbies for:
- Increased investment in grant and aid programs
- Tuition-free community college
- Pell Grants increases
- Improvement of Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program
- Simplification of FAFSA
- More generous repayment plans for student loans, lower interest rates
In short: this bill is a huge deal, guys. Tell your Reps. to support!
